Democrat Porter Up 261 Votes In California-45

The rest of the GOP line-up below the Kentucky Republican is expected to shuffle slightly. Sen.

Porter, a 44-year-old law professor at UC Irvine, defeated two-term Rep. Mimi Walters (R), 56, a former investment banker who served in House Republican leadership.

Unlike the 218 votes needed to become Speaker, McCarthy only needed to secure a simple majority of votes from his Republican colleagues to become minority leader, according to a TheHill news daily report.

The California Republican, an ally of President Donald Trump, fended off a challenge from conservative Rep. Jim Jordan of OH in a closed-door election.

At that point, McCarthy was running for speaker, but ran into opposition from the hard-line Freedom Caucus and withdrew his name for consideration. Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) is the leading contender to become the ranking Republican on Judiciary - though Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Ohio), a veteran of the Clinton impeachment battle, is also running.

Schumer was quick to tout the cohesiveness of Senate Democrats at a press conference after leadership elections. That would provide the Ohioan with an opportunity to strut his Trumpy stuff outside the more legally fraught venue of the Judiciary Committee. "It's not a racial thing", said Rep. Kathleen M. Rice, New York Democrat. "But if they are just interested in increasing taxes and attacking the president, I think they will overreach and hand us back the majority".

McCarthy has been the House majority leader for four years.

Porter is the first Democrat elected to the traditionally Republican district, which was created in 1983. John Cornyn of Texas, was pushed out by term limits. Though the tax cut lowered overall rates, it hurt wealthy taxpayers and property owners in high-tax, Democrat-run jurisdictions because it capped the state and local tax (SALT) deduction at $10,000. Or Ilhan Omar, of Minnesota's 5th congressional district, who is the first Somali-American elected to the U.S. Congress.

Walters, who was registered to vote in another district as recently as June 2017, drew criticism from some constituents for her lack of accessibility and declined to make any joint appearances with Porter. "It's time that we take accountability into our hands".

The new leaders have not had a chance to discuss how they will extend an olive branch to the Freedom Caucus and other supporters of its founder, Jim Jordan, who lost the race for minority leader to McCarthy, 159 votes to 43.

History teacher Francine Werner '68 said that while many believe that the Democrats can only focus on one issue or the other, she feels they can successfully manage to address several.

"I think we're entering a world we haven't really seen", Jordan said, according to NPR. They installed Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming as House Republican Conference chairman, as her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, sporting a cowboy hat, looked on.

Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise, who was shot past year during practice for the annual Congressional baseball game, will remain McCarthy's top deputy as Minority Whip, and Liz Cheney will be the conference chairwoman, a position her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, held three decades ago.
