Cliffsofmoher broke down just after passing the post the first time.

The Irish five-year-old fractured his right shoulder just 600m into the race but medical staff were unable to save him.

Parties galore are also in store across Perth, some of the biggest being held at Market Grounds, Henry Summer, The Stables, The Bach Club and, of course, Crown Perth, which a year ago hosted 24,000 WA racing fans on Cup day and expects even more today.

"We're seeing to the growing number of Australians who feel uncomfortable about watching horse racing, and tragic incident like this provided a catalyst for that concern".

"The jockey did a tremendous job to pull the horse up instantly and very carefully", Dr Fulton said.

'I had full vision, the jockey dismounted and kept the horse calm and the horse stood still. "It's a dream. It has just been one of those wonderful years".

Moore has not spoken to the media following the race but he is reportedly "shattered".

It is the fourth time in the past six years that the Cup has been shrouded by the death of horses.

Admire Rakti was a Japanese racehorse who collapsed and died from cardiac arrest at the Melbourne Cup in 2014.

The jockey of The Cliffsofmoher has been praised for his heroic efforts to save his horse from suffering a painful death.

A People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) representative told Daily Mail Australia in a statement that the organization was calling for an investigation into the horse's death. In 2015, fan-favorite Red Cadeaux suffered a serious injury during the Cup, and wound up having to be put down 2 1/2 weeks later.

Araldo placed seventh but was spooked by a flag in the crowd on the way back to weigh in, kicking out and breaking a rear leg on a fence.

Racing Victoria said these incidents occurred "infrequently" and insisted Victoria has one of the "best safety records in the world in racing".

The CliffsofMoher had won $1.7 million dollars for his owners.Today, he broke his shoulder during the 2018 #MelbourneCup & died on track behind the notorious "green screen of death".Animals & #gambling money are a TOXIC mix.Another lovely horse dead.
