She will become Tennessee's first female US senator, replacing the retiring Bob Corker. "Few voters associate Bredesen with the national Democratic Party, and he has worked hard to present himself to voters as a competent problem-solver rather than a partisan". The Republicans were going to nominate Rep. Marsha Blackburn whom the Democrats thought they could paint as an extremist.

"I think any other Democrat would be behind by 15 to 20 points", said Anthony Nownes, a professor at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

Taylor got political for the first time, going to bat for Bredesen and saying she could not in her right conscience vote for Blackburn, who's been seen at rallies in support of President Trump. She rarely diverged from Trump, and touted his proposed U.S. -Mexico border wall and tax cuts while blasting Bredesen's opposition to both. He was the only Democrat running for Senate to announce his support for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his contentious confirmation process.

And Swift took to Instagram on Election Day, posing for a photo with a Bredesen campaign sign as she encouraged her followers to vote.

"These are not MY Tennessee values", Swift wrote.

Blackburn thanked Trump and Pence in her victory speech and said she will be a leader who will "work with the president and keep this nation on the path to prosperity that we are on today".

Blackburn, however, looked to highlight Bredesen's party affiliation at every turn, regularly tying him to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and some of the more high-profile liberal members of the legislative body. "And you know what?"

On Tuesday night, she was happy to claim a piece of Tennessee history for women in the Senate. I am grateful she will join a Senate majority in Washington committed to putting America First.
