The suspect made headlines around the world after CCTV images revealed his resemblance to the Friends' star and his character Ross Geller.

The investigation centres around a theft from a restaurant in the British seaside resort on 20 September.

It prompted thousands of comments riffing on the popular show - with one user asking, "Could he BE any more like Ross?" - and eventually led to Schwimmer's response, which was "liked" over 600,000 times.

After the theft was reported, police took to Facebook to appeal to the public for help identifying the man, including a photo taken from CCTV footage.

The actor responded with a Twitter video that showed him scuttling furtively through a convenience store clutching a carton of beer.

"I heard he stole because his job is a joke, plus he's broke and don't get me started on his love life which is D.O.A." wrote an account under the name Brendan Bunting. As you can see, I was in NY.

Met Police officers arrested a 36-year-old man on suspicion of theft in Southall, west London last night.

Blackpool Police said: "Following the appeal we posted looking for a man who resembles a well-known actor, we now have an arrest".

'Thank you for the support, especially David Schwimmer!'

Schwimmer's lighthearted video, which attracted 180,000 retweets and 611,000 likes, had been posted on Twitter two days earlier.

'To the hardworking Blackpool Police, good luck with the investigation'. "We have investigated this matter thoroughly and have confirmed that David Schwimmer was in America on this date".
