India take on the Windies in the first contest on Sunday and Russell was included in the squad alongwith Keiron Pollard and Darren Bravo.

Chief selector MSK Prasad also said that it was not the end of the road for Dhoni in T20Is.

India: Rohit Sharma (Capt), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Dinesh Karthik, Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wk), Krunal Pandya, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, K Khaleel Ahmed, Umesh Yadav, Shahbaz Nadeem.

Pant is expected to fulfil the wicket-keeping responsibilities while Karthik could take on one of the positions in the outfield.

Months earlier, the Windies had also overcome the Indians in Mumbai, in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup, and Brathwaite said he was hoping for similar results in the three-match series.

With Rovman Powell still new to global cricket, much then will rest on the shoulders of veterans Kieron Pollard and Denesh Ramdin, while captain Carlos Brathwaite's role will also be pivotal.

In 2018, Dhoni, who has also captained India to 50-over World Cup glory in 2011, managed only 245 runs at 27.22 in 17 matches.

West Indies have endured a hard tour, losing both Tests inside three days and then going down 3-1 in the subsequent one-day series.

All-rounder Krunal Pandya, who has been consistent in IPL over the years, is in the squad and is likely to make his worldwide debut today if India decide to go in with a third spinner. On the eve of the match, Krunal had a lengthy batting session at the nets and also bowled his orthodox left-arm spin under the watchful eyes of bowling coach Bharat Arun.

Hello and welcome to Sportstarlive's coverage of the first T20I between host India and visitor Windies at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday. After winning the Test series 2-0 and the ODI series 3-1, India will be looking to complete a trio of series wins against the Windies.

With regular skipper Virat Kohli and ex-skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni missing the series and West Indies squad boosted by the inclusion of T20 specialists like Kieron Pollard, Evin Lewis, Darren Bravo and skipper Carlos Brathwaite, it promises to be a keen contest.
