Amazon to Offer Free Shipping With No Minimum Purchase This Holiday Season

"With hundreds of millions of items available for free shipping to all Amazon customers and more than three million items available with Prime FREE Same-Day Delivery, customers can enjoy the largest selection of items that are fast and free". Target announced last month it would offer free two-day shipping on all orders from November 1 to December 22.

As GeekWire points out, Amazon's free shipping offer doesn't guarantee two-day shipping.

With the all-important holiday season kicking off around Thanksgiving later this month, retailers are jockeying for customers' dollars and hoping to outpace Amazon, which takes up almost 50 cents of each dollar spent online in the US.

The online retailer is waiving the minimum purchase requirement for free shipping starting Monday.

About $720 billion in sales are up for grabs for the Black Friday shopping weekend, according to the National Retail Federation. Not to be beaten on its home turf, Amazon is already looking to counter Walmart and Target with its own bolstered free shipping.

Although this move by Amazon will be a blow to both Target and Walmart, it just goes to show why competition in the market is so important for consumers. Hundreds of millions of items will therefore become eligible for free shipping. Analysts estimated that Amazon took almost half of all online retail sales in 2017, and that it will account for even more this year.

In recent months, Amazon has extended same-day delivery from Whole Foods through Prime Now to more than 60 cities. The company expects sales for the fourth quarter to be between $66.5 billion and $72.5 billion.

This is on top of the unlimited FREE Two-Day Shipping that Prime members receive every day on more than 100 million items. The company usually sets the final date toward the end of the season.
