Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced they are expecting their first child together, just hours after they touched down in Sydney for their 16-day royal tour of Australia.

They did not alter their travel plans but did consider the medical risks of visiting countries like Tonga and Fiji where the Zika virus - which can lead to pregnancy complications - is present, according to CNN.

The Duchess of Sussex is pregnant, Kensington Palace has confimed, sparking excitement across Kent.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have kicked off their 16-day-tour of Australia and received a toy kangaroo for their unborn child.

Their trip coincides with the Invictus Games to be held in Sydney from October 20-27.

Meghan arrived with Prince Harry at St George's Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle; keeping a very low profile last week, and wearing a navy blue dress by Givenchy (which just so happened to be the designer of her wedding dress).

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry got a water taxi to the Opera House, where they watched a rehearsal of Spirit 2018 by the Bangarra Dance Theatre and did a public walkabout, meeting members of the public who had come out to say hello.

Harry and Meghan will attend the games' opening and closing ceremonies.

Kensington Palace announced the news on Monday morning.

"Wishing them all the best".

Speculation started around Friday that the duchess was pregnant when she wore a rather loose-fitting Givenchy coat to the royal wedding.

Meghan wowed schoolgirl sisters Hannah and Francesca Francis, 12 and 10, who said they were "super excited" to meet the couple.

"We are looking forward to celebrating that good news while they are enjoying their stay here in Australia", Morrison told a news conference in Canberra. She and Prince William meant to wait until the 12-week mark, but the announcement came much earlier than planned.

The couple posed for a photograph on the croquet lawn with the Governor General and his wife with the magnificent backdrop of Sydney Opera House behind them.

The baby will be seventh in line to the British throne after Prince Charles, Prince William and his three children and Prince Harry.

She captivated Britain. There was an ease to her confident smile, and contagious excitement about moving across the Atlantic and joining the royal family.

This, of course, isn't the first time fans have been elated with the news of another royal baby.
