PlayStation issue official update on console-breaking bug

Gamers on Reddit and elsewhere are complaining of a newly discovered bug that crashes the PlayStation 4 and effectively turns it into a brick unless you factory reset the console. In a post titled "WARNING: Set your messages to private", user Huntstark1 describes a scenario where nearly their whole team got booted out of a Rainbow Six: Siege match after they all received a message containing an unrecognized character.

The first step for a database rebuild is to boot the console into safe mode; Sony has instructions for booting into safe mode here. Messaging, and set Messages to either Friends (if you trust them) or No One.

It seems a malicious message is making the rounds on the PlayStation Network.

A fair few posts on Reddit claim they have received such a message, which has subsequently bricked their machine.

Some are reporting that messages can be sent to entire groups of players too, which forces the entire team to reset their consoles. Even deleting the message from the mobile app doesn't work. Huntstark writes, "It happened to me during Rainbow Six: Siege". Exactly the same thing - got a message, controller stopped working and audio cut out.

Sony didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

From a web browser, visit the PSN Privacy setting page, then sign in with your PS4 account credentials.

For now, you can set your PlayStation 4 and its mobile apps to only accept messages from friends you've already confirmed, or block messages completely: the options are under Account Management then Privacy Settings in the console settings.

We've reached out to Sony for further information and will update this article if more information becomes available.
