She wore local designers when on tour, and a number of emerging and African-American designers when at home.

In rare comments to the press, Trump said her trip - which also took in Ghana, Malawi and Kenya - was created to "show the world that we care".

"Melania Trump causes eyebrows in Africa with a new" white hat", ran a headline including the New York Times on Friday.

She participated in a ceremonial donation of one million textbooks in Malawi last week, even as her husband has suggested cuts to foreign aid.

Melania arrived in Africa on her first solo trip on October 1 with the aim of partnering USAID to advance the activities of her "Be Best" campaign aimed at children and women empowerment efforts.

Matt Carotenuto, a historian who coordinates St Lawrence University's African Studies programme, told CNN that Melania's choice of the hat was like her showing up to "an Alabama cotton farm in a confederate uniform".

"This is a first lady who's very, very careful about what she wears and what messages she does send, from her clothes to her facial expressions to ... how she looks and acts", Bennett told NPR's Mary Louise Kelly.

This trip marks Trump's first visit to Africa, as Time reports.

"Melania Trump looks like she's stolen Hannibal Lecter's Florence suits", another said.

The first lady of the United States continues to amaze the public of the tight program of the tour in Africa.

Asked if she believed Dr Ford's testimony, the First Lady indicated she did not want to comment directly.

She also addressed a press conference where she spoke on a range of issues including her husband's reputation in Africa and her fashion sense. She urged the public to "focus on what I do, not what I wear".

Security was tight with police deployed along the route and on rooftops as her convoy drove from the airport to the presidential palace. People love it, and she loves them.

On her four-country tour of Africa (which wrapped up in Egypt on the weekend) Trump's wardrobe had a freaky "safari chic" vibe, starting from when she stepped onto her jet in Maryland wearing a pair of leopard print Manolo Blahniks.

It is unknown if Melania will join Donald, after completing her first solo tour without him by her side.

Advocacy groups say they are hopeful the visit will end up having been more than just photo opportunities.
