Donald Trump pushes Ivanka's suitability for UN ambassador role

"I've heard a lot of names".

Haley, who reportedly discussed her resignation with the White House last week, only told her staff this morning about her intentions to resign.

President Trump meets with outgoing U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley in the Oval Office of the White House on Tuesday. She also often sides even more strongly with Israel than Trump, who has pushed USA policy away from its officially neutral stance on the conflict with the Palestinians.

But she has been overshadowed in recent months by the appointments of Trump loyalist Mike Pompeo as secretary of state and hawk John Bolton as White House national security adviser.

President Donald Trump has accepted Nikki Haley's resignation as USA ambassador to the UN.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley speaks at a press briefing at U.N. headquarters in New York City, New York, U.S., July 20, 2018.

Haley, the former governor of SC, has been among the more moderate members of Trump's administration.

And following Trump's controversial response blaming "both sides" for the violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., in August 2017, Haley said she had a "personal conversation" with the president.

President Donald Trump tweeted that he has a "big announcement with my friend Ambassador Nikki Haley in the Oval Office at 10:30 a.m". "As a private citizen, I look forward to supporting your re-election as President, and supporting the policies that will continue to move our country toward even greater heights".

In turn, Trump credited Haley with bringing glamour to the U.N. Ambassador's post while lavishly praising her for doing a "fantastic job". Will it be President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka, or her husband Jared Kushner?

"No I'm not running", she said emphatically.

Haley's first book, released in 2012 when she was governor of SC, was part of her launch as a national figure within the Republican party, and led to talk that year she might join the GOP ticket with Mitt Romney.

Haley's departure marked one of the rare examples of a senior Trump administration official making a graceful exit.

"I have given everything I've got these last eight years".

"I think you have to be selfless enough to know when you step aside and allow someone else do the job". "They know that if we say we're going to do something, we follow it through", she said.

Before being chosen as Trump's ambassador, Haley, 46, served as governor of the state of SC - the first woman to hold the post.
