About 80,000 Americans, including 180 children, died last year in the deadliest flu season in more than 40 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Of the 183 kids who died from the flu last season, 80 percent were unvaccinated.

A new survey on parents' attitude toward the flu vaccine may shed light on why some continue to resist the flu shot, even though it could put their children in danger.

It takes about two weeks for full protection to kick in after getting the flu shot, the health unit said, in a news release.

- The Maryland Department of Health confirms the first cases of the flu in the state for the 2018-2019 influenza season.

Taking a pass on the flu shot could mean passing on the virus and the risk to others, Lambton Public Health says.

If you do find yourself sick after you get the vaccine, that's probably because you were already exposed to it or came in contact with a strain of the flu that wasn't included in this year's vaccine. Not true. Flu vaccines contain either killed or weakened virus that are not capable of causing the flu.

'This is the season of respiratory viruses [so] people tend to catch other viruses at the same time [they] get the flu shot, and attribute it to the flu shot'.

"Getting vaccinated each year is important because the strains of influenza that circulate change over time". Flu shots are generally recommended for anyone age 6 months and older.

Historians believe misconceptions about the illness date back to the 1976 swine flu vaccine fiasco.

Ultimately, she says, the figures stand up the overall benefits of the flu shot.
