Real Madrid defender Ramos also said he had no concerns about the treatment he might receive from England supporters on his first visit to the country since tangling with Liverpool's Egypt forward Mohamed Salah in the Champions League final.

Ramos said that it was the job of the current squad to restore Spain to the heights that saw them triumph in three consecutive global tournaments - the European championships of 2008 and 2012 and the World Cup of 2010.

More deep-rooted are the doubts about Spain's possession game, so revolutionary during the golden years of 2008, 2010 and 2012, but now seen by some as a millstone around their necks.

It was put to the La Roja captain that former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique had been hired to phase him out.

It will be Spains first match since they were eliminated by hosts Russian Federation in the Second Round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and also England's first game since they lost to Belgium in the Third-Place match of the World Cup. He said, "I think that is something the press said".

Luis Enrique's task is to find the sweet spot between the old Spain and the new. "Luis Enrique is a coach who is known to be very strict in his demands and very focused on what he wants from his team". I still feel very young, full of hope, and I'm keen to keep winning more things with Spain.

" I know there will be difficulties and challenges but it is just great to be here".

Luis Enrique has already said he plans to place youth at the heart of the new era, and he made those intentions clear by including three uncapped players - Real Betis goalkeeper Pau Lopez, Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos and Valencia left-back Jose Gaya - in his first squad.

After the retirement of David Silva, Gerard Pique and Andres Iniesta, the former Barcelona coach would need to guide the team from scratch.
