"I think for the teams that went towards the end of the World Cup it's a really hard period because so many players have missed pre-season and you're not really sure what physical condition they're in".

And in England's 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Uefa Nations League on Saturday, Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw had to be taken off midway through the second half due to a head injury.

Marcus Rashford went into the global break under a cloud, after being red-carded for rashly lowering his head into Phil Bardsley's face during Manchester United's 2-0 win at Burnley, but he emerges from it as one of the few players to have scored points - and the only one to have scored any goals - for England.

"I'm really pleased for him more than anything", Southgate told Sky Sports after the 20-year-old scored his fifth worldwide goal.

"To get two goals this week, two really good finishes, is really important for him".

The pair travelled to St. George's Park from the U21s' camp in Norwich, as Gareth Southgate's squad continue preparations for the Three Lions' Kick It Out International against Switzerland at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday.

If England lose against Switzerland, it will be the nation's longest ever run of losses.

They're intelligent footballers, they should have a view of what's going on.

"We changed the shape in the second half, which helped, and we got our defence a little higher up the pitch".

Southgate also praised his players for the way they attempted to rectify their own problems themselves at the break in Leicester.

Southgate, meanwhile, said of the row between the players at half-time: 'We expect that, we encourage it. "It's the way we can keep raising the standards".
