N Korea recommits to denuclearising Korean peninsula

Kim Jong Un said that he wanted to "achieve denuclearization" and was ready for "stronger measures" to be taken to ensure that he did so, according to South Korean officials who met with Kim on Wednesday.

The two Koreas have set a date for a new summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, even as US diplomacy with North Korea has stalled.

This would be the third meeting this year between the two leaders.

This is the first time the North Korean leader laid out a potential deadline for dismantling nuclear weapons, the development of which pushed the region to the brink of military confrontation past year.

Thursday, Chung told reporters about his talks with Kim.

Morning Joe had a chuckle on Thursday after President Trump got on Twitter to thank Kim Jong Un for his alleged recommitment to the denuclearization of North Korea.

"Kim conveyed the view that declaring the end of the war has nothing to do with concerns raised in the US and by some in South Korea that the declaration will weaken the South Korea-US alliance, or (lead to) the withdrawal of US troops", Chung said.

Kim and Moon have agreed to hold the new summit to continue strengthening ties and work on the denuclearization of the peninsula, as stipulated in their joint declaration signed in the first inter-Korean summit in April.

Kim is also said to have stressed that his trust in US President Donald Trump remained unchanged, and that he had never negatively assessed the US president.

What about the United Nations report? They are believed to be those of American soldiers who died in the Korean War.

"I can not reveal it here, but (Kim) asked for a message to be conveyed to the USA on the matter", Chung said.

The inter-Korean summit would come just before a gathering of world leaders at the United Nations in NY at the end of September, but Seoul said Thursday that it was unlikely Kim would attend. They say the North has often sought to gain economic aid and then failed to keep its promises.

During the Seoul envoys' trip, the two sides agreed that Kim and Moon would meet in Pyongyang on September 18-20, in their third summit since April. But ticket sales to tourists from China and Europe are reportedly brisk despite prices that start at 100 euros ($115) and go all the way up to 800 euros ($925) for VIP seating.

Chinese President Xi Jinping's decision to turn down a reported invitation to attend a military parade in North Korea and celebrations marking 70 years since the founding of the isolated state may have helped him dodge problems on several fronts.

The South Koreans said Kim Jong Un expressed frustration about skepticism over "the meaningful steps" he had taken to restrict his weapons program.

Trump said he thinks it is going to be a "positive letter". Moon's popularity at home has fallen since his earlier meetings with Kim and the Trump-Kim summit.

Pompeo declined to comment Thursday on what the next steps are for US diplomacy with North Korea.
