Antoine Griezmann, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe make up the rest of the longlist, though Federation Internationale de Football Association world cup finalist and Federation Internationale de Football Association 208 tournament's Best player victor Modric is a clear favourite to grab the coveted award after captaining Croatia to the final of the World Cup as well as having a pivotal role in winning the Champions League with Real Madrid.

He will be out to dethrone Ronaldo, who has endured a mixed start to life as a Juventus player following his €112million move from Madrid, where he scored 44 goals in all competitions last season and won the Champions League for the fifth time in his career.

Real Madrid midfielder Modric won the UEFA Men's Player of the Year award after following up Champions League success by inspiring Croatia's run to the World Cup final, picking up the Golden Ball despite defeat to France in Moscow.

However, Portugal's last 16 exit to Uruguay in Russian Federation and Ronaldo's failure to score in the semi-finals or final of the Champions League has opened the door for Modric.

Modric's fine form last season saw him lifting four trophies with Real, while he also led his country to their first ever FIFA World Cup final.

"He deserves it because he was the best player in the Club World Cup and the best player in the World Cup".

Even if they lose out on the best player award, Messi and Ronaldo could walk away with a prize as they are both nominated for the Puskas award for best goal.

"I've always wanted to see a woman win this prestigious award", Brazil worldwide Marta told France Football.

Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois was voted the best goalkeeper.

Reynold Pedros of Lyon, Japan boss Asako Takakura and Netherlands coach Sarina Wiegman are in the running for best women's coach.
