The game opened up in the closing minutes as England pushed for an equaliser, with Rashford shooting right at De Gea after being played into the penalty area with a neat ball from Harry Kane.

"We are under no illusion that Spain were the better team for long periods".

"They pressed us and we didn't keep the ball well enough".

England took the lead early in the first half through Marcus Rashford, who latched onto the end of a fizzing cross from Luke Shaw.

England reached the semifinals in Russian Federation, but lost to Croatia and then fell to Belgium in the third-place game.

"That balance with the left footer for us, with him and Danny (Rose), was an advantage in several situations".

Kane was presented with his Golden Boot for being top scorer at the World Cup amid a buoyant atmosphere before kick-off that continued with a fast start from the hosts, thanks in large part to the unfortunate Shaw.

Shaw, who has had a hard recovery from a bad leg break three years against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, and has often been singled out for criticism by Jose Mourinho, had played a key role in the game, which England lost 2-1.

Rashford so almost levelled with a powerful header that De Gea clawed away from his goal while Jordan Pickford comfortable kept out Saul after another sweeping move forward.

But the game was overshadowed by a horrific injury to England's left-back, Luke Shaw. However, the strike was ruled out for a foul on De Gea as Spain hung on to claim three points.

England suffered their successive defeat as they were defeated by Spain in their UEFA Nations League opener.

"I am especially happy about De Gea's performance", said Enrique. We are a different profile of players who can't play like they do.

"We have one of the best goalkeepers in the world, he's showed that for many years in the Premier League".

Shaw left the field on a stretcher wearing an oxygen mask and a neck brace after lengthy treatment but was "up and talking" in the change rooms.
