Loki TV Series and Other Marvel Shows Coming to Disney Streaming Service

The plans are said to include a number of limited series using characters that haven't received their own stand alone movies.

Last night, we learned that Disney's forthcoming streaming service (which has yet to be named or given a launch date) is challenging Netflix for the Streaming Giant crown in a most aggressive way: they're giving Tom Hiddleston's Loki and Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch their very own TV shows. The plan is to create shows based around MCU characters who have yet to have their own standalone movies, with Loki and Scarlet Witch coming first. Still, this is hugely exciting news and better yet, Variety's reporting that each show will have a large budget that rivals a major studio production and consist of one season made up of six to eight episodes. They will be produced by Marvel Studios, and studio boss Kevin Feige is reportedly going to have a "hands-on" role in them. They've got plenty of other series and original movies lined up, as well, but the big question has been where Marvel fits in. There have been exceptions, mostly on Agents of SHIELD where Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill) and Jamie Alexander (Sif) all appeared, albeit early in the shows' run.

Disney's streaming service just got a whopping dose of Marvel firepower. And better yet, they will be played by the same actors from the film franchise, further bridging the gap between Marvel movies and TV.

Storylines for each series are still being teased out, but Disney appears to be holding back some significant fire power for the big screen. Will Loki and Scarlet Witch shows carry enough weight to hook viewers?

There's no word when we might see these shows, but Disney Play is expected to launch sometime in 2019. That's a huge coup and raises the price of each of these potential limited series quite a bit, so Marvel likely wouldn't confirm anything until it had locked contracts from the potential stars anyway.

While the report didn't reveal any details on possible story lines, Elizabeth Olsen has previously talked about adopting the House of M storyline.
