Grassley Fires Back at Requests From Ford's Lawyers

Without directly referencing Trump Jr., Conway said Ford "should not be insulted, and she should not be ignored".

A day before his criticism of Trump Jr., Flake tweeted that he wants to move rush a vote to confirm Kavanaugh.

Gillibrand, who has supported legislation on sexual assault and harassment in the military and in Congress, said she would not recommend that Ford testify without an FBI investigation.

"This is a lifetime position", she said.

However, Katz maintained that Blasey still preferred that the committee fully investigated her claims before she testified.

"We believe that Chrissy has acted bravely by voicing her experience from the past, and we know how hard this is for her. Chrissy is not someone who chooses to be in the spotlight", the letter said.

The FBI has already conducted a background check on Kavanaugh and added Ford's letter to Kavanaugh's file. Interviews with almost a dozen women across the country this week suggested a nuanced reaction to the news in Washington that could pose risks to both parties.

Kavanaugh's public hearings, then, and any inquiry now into the accusations against him, are less like a trial and more like a high-stakes job interview - and this job comes with life tenure.

Most of the female candidates this year are Democrats. Ford added that she once visited the other classmate in a hospital. The Supreme Court nominee has denied Ford's claims, and there is a possibility a hearing will be held next week regarding the allegations.

There are challenges for Democrats too. As members of the Senate determine whether Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh should serve as a Supreme Court Justice, this context is critical. In this district, where Hillary Clinton easily defeated Trump, GOP Rep. Barbara Comstock is fighting for political survival.

"I want to see what she [Prof Ford] has to say but I want to give it all the time they need", the Republican president said.

Later on Wednesday, Grassley wrote to the senior Democrat on the committee, Dianne Feinstein, requesting she immediately provide an unredacted copy of the letter Ford sent her in July about the assault allegation, saying he must review it before Monday's hearing.

On Wednesday, Republicans, who have rebuffed Ford's request for Federal Bureau of Investigation intervention, urged Ford to accept their invitation to testify and signaled they'd forge ahead with Kavanaugh's confirmation. Modern judicial nominees undergo incredibly thorough vetting in preparation because they know that senators may also explore every aspect of their past.

"I remember when I was that age".

That now means that Ford is almost certain to tell her story publicly sometime next week. "Things could have been interpreted a little bit differently". Judge has told the committee he does not recall the incident and does not want to speak publicly.

Also in Colorado, Linda Gumeson, 70, said she couldn't believe allegations that were more than three decades old were being taken seriously today.

"Look, if she shows up and makes a credible showing, that will be very interesting and we'll have to make a decision", Trump told reporters at the White House. "It was different times".
