A relatively straightforward putt for par on the final hole of the Philadelphia course was all that stood in the way of the Englishman and the winner's spot, but the ball spun around the hole and away to force Rose into a playoff against Keegan Bradley.

But Rose subsequently also dropped a shot at the par-four 18th, where his 15-foot putt for the win lipped out. "It's tough to go from being on Ryder Cup teams, being on Presidents Cup teams to being outside the top 100 in the world". His swing was worthy of a multi-shot win but he again missed key birdie chances throughout the week.

The top five players heading into next week's tournament at East Lake will have the opportunity to win the FedEx Cup outright by winning the Tour Championship.

"To make the Ryder Cup team and get back to East Lake, that was a pretty big task at the beginning of the year and to be able to accomplish that is something I'm very proud of, " Woods said.

Bradley, who birdied the 16th and 17th holes to storm up the leaderboard, finished with his fourth career victory and first since the 2012 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. To win and to put everything together when I didn't know if I was going to win again, to get to the Tour Championship, to have them here and have what's going on in my life is just so wonderful. When play was postponed on Sunday, he did not report to the club.

After a mid-round sandwich and yet another birdie at No. 13, Woods had pulled within one shot of the lead, but he failed to finish his rally.

Turns out, a 62 would have put him in the playoff.

That kind of scheduling certainty is why he was so focused on qualifying for the Tour Championship, and why he really gave some thought to the benefits of what could have been a rain-shortened event. Woods is now No. 20 in the standings.

TV coverage for Monday's 2018 BMW Championship's Round 4 begins at 10 am EST on Golf Channel. If he doesn't qualify, Spieth would violate a recent policy requiring PGA Tour members to play a tournament they haven't been to in the last four years.

The American pair were the only two players to move from outside of the top-30 inside the bubble, with Jordan Spieth and Emiliano Grillo both dropping out and seeing their season end a week early.

Still to be determined is the penalty. Not that he played poorly, more that his reward would have been greater had it ended after three rounds.

"I was in control of my own destiny but just didn't have it this week", said Spieth after coming tied 55th.
