The husband at shot and killed his wife and the man.

In a press conference, the Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said that, at about 5:20 p.m. on September 12, 2018, deputies responded to the trucking business near Bear Mountain Sports to reports of shots fired.

He did not disclose the identities of the victims, and added the woman whose vehicle was taken, and her child, were unharmed. They made it out safely and were able to escape from the vehicle, Youngblood said. He then shot the man before turning it on his wife.

A gunman in the USA killed five people, including his wife, before turning the gun on himself as police closed in.

Investigators are trying to determine a motive for the shootings, which left five victims and the gunman dead.

"It's highly unusual to have six people killed in one incident", the sheriff said.

That's when he was confronted by a deputy, put a gun to his chest and then killed himself.

A deputy pulled him over on a highway and confronted the suspect with his gun drawn, Youngblood said. But he later added, "This is the new normal".

"Where we go from here is try to figure out why this started and why there are so many players involved in the connection, because obviously these are not random shootings", Youngblood said.

He told reporters about 10 to 15 minutes elapsed from the first shooting until the gunman killed himself, says CBS Bakersfield affiliate KBAK-TV.

Authorities are interviewing 30 witnesses and processing multiple crime scenes to piece together what led up to the violence.

Bakersfield is a community of 375,000 people about 115 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
