The woman, Julie Swetnick, a Washington resident, is represented by lawyer Michael Avenatti, who revealed her identity on Twitter and posted her photograph.

Mr Kavanaugh was said to have been involved in co-operative efforts with other males to spike drinks in a bid to have girls "lose their inhibitions and their ability to say no", causing them to become "inebriated and disorientated so they could then be gang raped in a side room or bedroom".

She also said in her affidavit sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee that in approximately 1982 "I became the victim of one of these "gang" or "train" rapes where Mark Judge and Brett Kavanaugh were present".

Swetnick, who released her sworn statement through high-profile lawyer Michael Avenatti, says she now holds an active security clearance and works "within the federal government".

Kavanaugh responded to Swetnick's allegations in a statement released by the White House: "This is ridiculous and from the Twilight Zone".

We do not know if others can confirm that Swetnick attended house parties with Brett Kavanaugh, who graduated from high school in 1983.

Swetnick's declaration comes a day before Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, who has accused Kavanaugh of groping her and attempting to remove her clothes when they were both teenagers, are set to testify in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Two other friends of Ford's say that she told them a similar story - one in 2016 and one in 2017.

Kavanaugh was handpicked by Donald Trump for the lifelong post on the Supreme Court, and has continued to enjoy the USA president's steadfast support despite the allegations against him.

For his part, Kavanaugh six times denied ever sexually assaulting anyone in a Monday interview with Fox News.

He also refuted media and internet speculation about some mysterious entries in his high school yearbooks, saying they were inside jokes about a friend's penchant for fighting, and the use of the letter "f" repeatedly did not refer to sexual activity.

Avenatti has drawn national attention for his representation of Stormy Daniels, an adult film star who said Trump and his then-attorney Michael Cohen orchestrated a hush money payment to her in exchange for silence about an alleged affair she had with Trump.

"During the incident, I was incapacitated without my consent and was unable to fight off the boys raping me".

Murkowski said an FBI investigation into the nominee's past "would sure clear up all the questions". "I never had any sexual or physical encounter of any kind with Dr. Ford". However, the committee has scheduled a vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation for Friday morning. "Somebody yelled down the hall, 'Brett Kavanaugh just put his penis in Debbie's face, '" she said.

Kavanaugh has denied the accusations of Blasey Ford and another woman, Deborah Ramirez, whose allegations of sexual misconduct were reported earlier this week by The New Yorker.

A spokesman for Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee said they were reviewing the affidavit.
