Apple CarPlay now supports Google Maps

Finally, users can access saved lists from Google Maps on CarPlay, and the app features real-time traffic updates for those who use it for the commute between home and work.

Google Maps has navigated its way to CarPlay, with Apple's in-car infotainment interface opening up to Google's app with the arrival of iOS 12.

Back at WWDC in June, Apple announced that third-party navigation apps like Google Maps can be used on CarPlay systems. Warning: you won't be able to use Siri with Google Maps on CarPlay, according to 9to5Mac, but there is a built-in Google voice search.

This new parking notification, which you can see in the image at the top of this article, allows you to dismiss the suggestion, or have Google Maps direct you to the parking spot.

Waze is also expected to support CarPlay, but the search giant has yet to update the app to support CarPlay.

This means that if you drive a vehicle with CarPlay support, you can now display Google Maps on your car's infotainment screen. Here's what you need to know about Apple's latest mobile OS, which powers iPhones and iPads.

I expect to give this a spin and update you on my experience with third-party mapping apps in the near future. You'll need iOS 12 on your iPhone, of course, also a free download, together with a auto - or aftermarket infotainment system - that has CarPlay support. If you prefer Google's other mapping tool, Waze is coming at some point, as well.

Once done, go to Settings General CarPlay on your iPhone and select your vehicle. And that's not almost as much fun, especially if you're driving one of those vehicles where CarPlay costs hundreds of dollars extra. Yeah, there are a lot of upgrades here that iOS users have been missing out on, unless you avoided CarPlay altogether and just mounted your phone in front of you.
