The American flag flies at full-staff over the White House on Monday.

"There's always one senator that stands out above the rest, and the last few years that's been John", Alexander said of McCain, his longtime Senate colleague.

American Legion National Commander Denise Rohan said, "On the behalf of The American Legion's two million wartime veterans, I strongly urge you to make an appropriate presidential proclamation noting Sen".

Glowering in public and near-silent for two days, President Donald Trump relented under pressure Monday by tersely recognising Senator John McCain's "service to our country" and re-lowering the White House flag.

Earlier Monday, a statement written by McCain before his death read like a not-so-veiled criticism of the president.

That followed reports that the U.S. president had decided not to issue a statement drafted by White House aides praising Mr McCain as a "hero", instead sending a brief tweet. Trump eventually spoke about the senator while meeting with evangelical leaders at the White House on Monday night. Senators have time to decide what the best memorial for McCain is, Alexander said. Trump is not expected to attend. He will be buried on Sunday in Annapolis, Md. "Whatever policy gets pursued by others, I can just tell you we believe this week should be about John McCain and his legacy as both a USA senator and as a member of our military, who was shot down and spent five years in a prisoner of war camp".

Trump also said that Chief of Staff John Kelly, Secretary of Defense James Mattis and National Security Adviser John Bolton will represent the White House at McCain's services.

Rick Davis, spokesperson for the family of US Senator John McCain, speaks to the media during a news conference, August 27, 2018 at the Arizona State Capitol Executive Tower in Phoenix, Arizona.

Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, who served with McCain for 31 years, says he's in favor of "naming nearly any building" for McCain, but adds, "I'm not sure that I would make a decision on a specific building at this point".

McCain died Saturday at age 81 after battling brain cancer.

McCain's funeral is scheduled for Sunday. Davis did not weigh in at length Monday on the search for a successor, saying only that McCain probably would have wanted to see a Hispanic woman take his place.

Trump feuded with McCain and has refused to talk about him since his death on Saturday.

"Mr. President, any thoughts on John McCain?"
