RFS spokesman, Marty Webster said firefighters had conducted a partial assessment of properties and expected to complete their assessment of potential damage in the coming days.

The winter blazes left scientists "gobsmacked" as they tore through parts of NSW, leading to a total fire ban across much of the state.

Two other fires south of Sydney continue to burn out of control: the blaze on Croobyar Road in Mount Kingiman, near Ulladulla; and a fire at West Cambewarra Road in North Nowra.

Last night, a blaze near Bega was threatening properties and some people had been told it was "too late to leave".

The main concern right now for the RFS is on the South Coast, where emergency warnings have been declared for out of control fires near Nowra and Ulladulla.

"It's impacting on homes in North Nowra as we speak".

"Our advice - and the images show - it's close to urban areas there".

NSW rural fire service deputy commissioner Rob Rogers said the fires at Bega and Ulladulla were "quite big" and would stay uncontained for "some time".

The fire has been at emergency level since about 8.00am and an evacuation centre has already been set up at the Ulladulla Civic Centre.

Residents in the area are advised to follow their bushfire survival plan, and Insp Shepherd said if anyone is planning on relocating to do so before any fire reaches their property.

Wind gusts of 67km/h were recorded at Williamtown at 10:30am.

"Under these conditions, fires are uncontrollable, unpredictable and fast- moving".

"Embers will be blown up to six kilometres ahead of the fire, creating spot fires that will move quickly in different directions."

Fire crews have been on high alert, after the entire state of New South Wales was last week declared as either "in drought" or "drought affected", bringing dry conditions. "Escaped fires pose a very real and potentially deadly threat to the public, especially if that escaped burn takes hold and fire authorities are not notified", he said.
