The series will trace the history of the NBA's players from the merger with the ABA to now and how players grew their off the court brands and platforms.

Showtime has announced a new documentary series about the changing role of professional athletes in today's political environment, with National Basketball Association star LeBron James as executive producer. Ingraham published a book way back in 2006 entitled, you guessed it, Shut Up And Sing: How Elites from Hollywood, Politics and the Media Are Subverting America.

Although James has always been a Trump critic, calling the president "U bum" in a 2017 tweet, Trump's tweet was the president's first attack on the player, who just opened up a school for underprivileged children in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.

From NFL players taking a knee on the field in protest of racial injustice to President Trump insulting LeBron James on Twitter, athletes have become increasingly entwined in politics over the past few years.

"If being a star athlete is inherently a political experience, "Shut Up and Dribble" tells that complex and dramatic story from the past to the present and from the inside out", Nevins said via Variety.

"Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon", the tweet read. "[Is] he's kinda used sports to kinda divide us, and that's something that I can't relate to". He made Lebron look smart, which isn't easy to do. "And I was like, 'Oh wow, this is all because of sports, '" James said.

"Look, there might be a cautionary lesson in LeBron for kids", she continued.

The spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a question on whether the first lady planned to visit the I Promise school.
