After eliminating Serena Williams on Tuesday, Kvitova took little time to make it through round three, seeing off her opponent 6-4 6-2.

In the women's bracket, Serena Williams faces Daria Gavrilova on Monday night, her first match since she suffered the most lopsided defeat of her career.

Federer's last competitive match was a painful one, going down to Kevin Anderson 13-11 in the fifth set of their Wimbledon quarterfinal after leading by two sets to love. When she withdrew from the Rogers Cup, the 36-year-old Williams said she's been struggling with postpartum emotions.

"Cincinnati has always been a good tournament for me", said Federer, the reigning Australian Open champion. "I just began. I just started - definitely at the very, very beginning".

"I would probably add more best-of-five-set matches in finals", said the world No.2 after his Cincinnati Masters second-round win over Peter Gojowczyk.

Kyle Edmund also went out in the second round, losing in straight sets to the 19-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov.

The Swiss won 6-4 6-4 as he attempts to win this event for the eighth time, having first triumphed here in 2005. I think center court plays much faster than the outside courts, so you don't have much time.

Looking sharper and relaxed, Williams came out with a point to prove, the big-hitting veteran converting a break point at the third time of asking for an early 2-0 lead.

"I have played four three-set matches and a couple of long ones in Washington. Then I had an ongoing hip injury", he said.

Andy Murray lost to Lucas Pouille 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 in the first round of the Western & Southern Open on Monday, clearing another obstacle for Roger Federer in this U.S. Open tuneup.

In other action, South Korean Chung Hyeon rallied to beat Jack Sock 2-6 6-1 6-2 and set up a second-round clash with Argentine fourth seed Juan Martin del Potro.

Also, Lesia Tsurenko routed Danielle Collins 6-0, 6-2; qualifier Viktoria Kuzmova topped Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-0, 4-6, 6-1; and Anett Kontaveit defeating Barbora Strycova 6-3, 6-0.

Caroline Garcia reached the third round with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over the wildcard Victoria Azarenka, Australia's Ashleigh Barty beat Marketa Vondrousova 6-3, 7-5, while Maria Sakkari upset the Indian Wells champion Naomi Osaka 6-3, 7-6 (8).
