Christopher Watts, 33, was led into the court room in Weld County, Colorado on Thursday in an orange jumpsuit and shackles.

"Chris Watts, the husband of Shanann, has been placed into custody and is awaiting charges".

A family friend, Lauren Arnold, told 9NEWS late Wednesday that family members had told her that Chris Watts had confessed to killing Shanann and their two daughters, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3. "We have strong reason to believe we know where the children are, and recovery efforts are in process".

Chris Watts is a former employee of the company, said Andarko spokesperson Jennifer Brice.

Soon after his family's disappearance Chris played the anxious husband and father, and in several TV interviews he made a public plea for their return.

Chris Watts walks into a Weld County courtroom on Thursday.

"I called her and texted her several times", Watts' friend told KDVR.

CNN affiliate KMGH aired video showing Chris Watts' pickup truck being towed from the family's home overnight, as well as investigators removing items from the house in garbage bags.

A Colorado father who went on TV to plead for the return of his missing wife and daughters has been arrested in connection with their murders.

Byron Falls, who bought Shanann Watts' house in Belmont, west of Charlotte, said Thursday that she had been in a hurry to sell and left behind the furniture as part of the sale.

After a short breath, Watts turned his head, looked straight into the camera, and made one final plea for help.

"I miss them", Watts said of feeding them dinner. Watts also said "I believe that she is somewhere and I hope that she is safe". "Please bring them back".

"As terrible as this outcome is, our role now is to do everything we can to determine exactly what occurred", John Camper, director of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, said at a news conference in Frederick, a small town on the grassy plains north of Denver, where fast-growing subdivisions intermingle with drilling rigs and oil wells. "It was tearing me apart last night", he said.

He added, "I just want to know why". Camper said investigators believe they know where to find the bodies of the two children.

Shanann Watts' Facebook page names Passaic, N.J., as her hometown. "This is completely unlike her", the friend said.

He said he hasn't spoken to her parents since the tragedy, but a neighbor told him they flew to Colorado.

Law enforcement has not confirmed the confession, only that Shanann Watts and her daughters are dead.

The Colorado man who confessed to killing his pregnant wife and two young daughters will be in court Thursday afternoon to face charges. "It was an emotional conversation - I'll leave it at that", he replied. "I guess when you want to, it happens".
