Mourinho frustrated as Premier League clubs race to beat new deadline

Despite slashing a club record £60 million on signing Riyad Mahrez, City have enjoyed a uieter window after spending over £200 million last summer on assembling a squad that smashed a host of Premier League records in romping towards the title.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool open their season at home at Anfield against West Ham United early on Monday morning (NZ time). I'm just not sure, they've got themselves in a situation now where they're desperate.

But he was quick to point out his United side were closest to runaway leaders Manchester City last season, even if they finished 19 points adrift.

Manchester United have offered to pay just £22.3m for Arsenal target Jerome Boateng because the defender is demanding a huge £12.5m-a-year contract, according to the Sun.

Pochettino added: "We have a very good squad, with very good players and it is very hard to add players to that".

Unai Emery has already splashed out on Sokratis from Borussia Dortmund but with Calum Chambers joining Fulham on loan the Gunners are in the market for another centre-back and Boateng is one of several players being linked.

"The list of injured players is an important list and, after training, I will speak with that group of [World Cup] players because everybody is different, physically and mentally, to see how they feel they are and to understand how they can help or not help".

Pochettino explained: "I think it's so hard now".

"The manager is obviously not happy about the signings he hasn't been able to make and not having certain players available on their pre-season tour, which isn't nice to hear if you are a young kid trying to make your mark on the fringes of the squad".

Mourinho has endured a hard summer in the transfer market.

England internationals Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Eric Dier are among the players to have been given time off after the tournament, with no participation in pre-season games as a result.

Sergio Romero, Valencia, Marcos Rojo, Dalot, Ander Herrera and Matic are all injured for Leicester's visit, while Mourinho needs to check on the fitness of those that returned late from the World Cup. Here are the best of them.

"The information I have is no", said Mourinho when asked if he would be adding to his squad.

"But he's got great experience, he's been at top clubs, he's been in hard positions before, he's in a hard position now I think, but he needs to try to find a way to get out of it".
