The Daily Mail says he kept his cool in front of the media ahead of Friday's Premier League opener against Leicester, but privately he was said to be angry and frustrated.

The seats all face towards a television up on the wall next to a match board where Jose Mourinho will no doubt be dishing out his tactics and formation as he seeks to get the season off to a winning start.

"I know there has been a lot of talk about pre-season in the press but I am sure behind the scenes, Jose has been giving them the right amount of work".

"So I will have to focus on the players I have and in relation to this first couple of matches, maybe four matches because after Burnley there is national team and a couple of weeks to recover people and prepare people better, is to focus on players available so I'm not thinking about that list I give you, I focus on what we have".

Jerome Boateng was another option but Bayern Munich have not been keen to sanction a loan move.

Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic are among six players ruled out of the game with injury, with captain Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo, Sergio Romero and Diogo Dalot also sidelined.

"They returned on Monday".

Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Phil Jones all came back early from their own extended breaks but Mourinho sounded downbeat again when he was asked about the new season.

"I repeat, pre-season is hard when you don't have your players to work with".

"When I listen, when I read - not much but sometimes I do - it is hard to believe that we finished second because you [the media] are capable of making people who finished second look like they were relegated and capable of making people who win nothing and finish below us look like serial winners".

Manchester United have been hit by injuries throughout the pre-season tour of the United States and there are plenty of first-team stars that have only just returned from their holidays due to exploits in the World Cup this summer. "When I listen, when I read, not much but sometimes I do, is hard to believe that we finished second, because you are capable of making people that finish second look like they were relegated, and people who win nothing, finish below us, and you make them look like serial winners".

Mourinho has won three Premier League titles with Chelsea and two Champions League trophies as Porto and Inter Milan manager.
