The biggest news is World Cup victor Paul Pogba being named as captain; whether this is a permanent decision remains to be seen.

United were awarded a penalty in the opening two minutes when Daniel Amartey handled the ball, and after Pogba tried to take the ball to the spot, he was met by an insistent Sanchez.

Leicester pushed for a reply and got one in injury time in rather freakish fashion, with sub Jamie Vardy heading in from point-blank range after Ricardo Perreira's cross had come back off the post.

"It is just the win that is the most important".

On top of his transfer troubles, Mourinho had a host of injuries and players lacking match sharpness after the World Cup to contend with.

"Jose Mourinho is a great manager, one of the best managers in the world over the last 15 years and will go down in history".

Amid rumours of a rift between the Manchester United manager and his star player, Pogba starts as United's captain against Leicester City on Friday night.

Jose Mourinho has insisted that he should be referred to as a "head coach" and not a manager in another apparent swipe at executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

That's according to Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas.

The wing backs were pressing forward, the midfielders worked well in tandem, and Leicester were unable to cope with the home side's fluid play at first. Paul [Pogba] was fantastic - his contribution was awesome, but the fuel was disappearing every minute, so we were in trouble and we needed [Scott] McTominay and [Marouane] Fellaini to give me that balance in midfield.

That's how many points United dropped last season against teams who finished in the bottom half of the table.

Mourinho would rather have had more bodies available due to successful transfers - and made one pointed reference to his own role in the recruitment process - but he could not fail to be impressed by Pogba's powerhouse showing in the 2-1 win.

Mourinho's desire to be solid and hard to break down as a team - perhaps enhanced by an erratic and ever-changing defence - meant players such as Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Alexis Sánchez were often denied the creative licence required to break down smaller... I know it's a great cup, it will stay in my mind, but I want to win all the trophies.

A good opportunity came when Pogba fed Sanchez and he set up Mata, who had a shot that was deflected just wide.
