Jose Mourinho checks his notes on the sideline during last night's match against Leicester City at Old Trafford.

Mourinho hailed Pogba's "monster" performance after the game but also once more referenced United's lack of signings this summer, saying: "I find myself with the market closed in a situation I did not think I would be in".

"Unlucky? I think we were without the clinical edge needed to finish the good moves we had in the first half", Puel told Sky Sports. Throughout the half United's new signing Fred looked very impressive, he was extremely composed on the ball and worked very hard when United weren't in possession, if he can continue this type of performance for the rest of the season United will have a player on their hands.

Mourinho was full of praise for Pogba, who impressed for United just four days after he returned to training with United and 26 days after he helped France win the World Cup final.

It was a great start from United as within the first 2 minutes they had a penalty.

However the French forward appear to frustrate his boss when leaving the pre-season tour of America early to attend the birth of his second child. "Of course, to concede a goal just a couple of seconds after the beginning of the game is a shame and we have to correct this".

"The likes of Raphael Varane, who has proved himself to be the best defender on the planet right now, I think he will be too far to go and get him, the amount of money", he added.

"The team played as a team", Mourinho said.

However, he can still rely on one of the world's best goalkeepers as David de Gea put his poor World Cup showing behind him with a fine save to prevent Maddison levelling. But the players gave everything, they gave what they had.

Victory in the Premier League opener was a much-needed shot in the arm after weeks of doom and gloom, with summer target Harry Maguire's inclusion in the Foxes' line-up serving as a reminder of what they missed.

Leicester came close to an equaliser though when substitute Jamie Vardy robbed Shaw and found Demarai Gray whose flick forced another good save out of De Gea. So it was not easy to manage the game by the touchline point of view.

Luke Shaw scored his first career goal to increase United's lead.
