Liverpool's 2-goal Sadio Mane: I'm very happy!

City won 2-0 away to Arsenal, who were sixth last season, and the country's highest spenders Liverpool demolished West Ham United 4-0 at Anfield on Sunday.

Salah and Mane's pain at worldwide level was Liverpool's gain as early exits at the World Cup with Egypt and Senegal meant they could join the club's pre-season tour of the United States, unlike a host of Premier League stars who returned to training just last week after their exertions in Russian Federation.

Replacing Salah in the dying minutes, Daniel Sturridge converted his first touch after coming on as a late substitute. West Ham for sure will play a good season but they are not United or City, that's how it is.

"We are still Rocky Balboa, not Ivan Drago", he said on the eve of the season, invoking the underdog spirit of the fictional American boxer.

"This season will be unbelievable hard".

Liverpool lived up to their billing as the biggest threat to Manchester City retaining the Premier League title as both sides shone on the opening weekend of the season.

"We can not test the test before we have a test".

"We know the expectations; we have expectations as well", said Klopp.

Liverpool, though, were comfortable without ever needing to hit top gear and certainly look like the title challengers most consider them to be.

Only two of those started: one, goalkeeper Alisson Becker, had a gentle introduction, while the other, Naby Keita, looked a force to be reckoned with even at this early stage.

"And I think you're really going to see him really come to the fore this year". So that's really good. However, it is clearly apparent that a team must adopt a more conserved, pragmatic approach to counter Liverpool's style of play.

"For us it was not flawless, but really good".

With Premier League defences likely to focus their resources on stopping Salah this season, there's nothing to stop Mane heavily adding to his opening two goals.

It's great to see him already off the mark this term. We conceded the last goal in the last second of the period so you arrive to the dressing room with another task if you lose just 1-0.

After the mild post-Upton Park chaos, they now have a new manager in Manuel Pellegrini, who has finally secured the financial backing of the owners. "This kind of competition you have to get in a team like Liverpool".

A very positive start to the season, one which should prove to be once again immensely exciting and rewarding for fans.
