It's So Difficult - Mauricio Pochettino On Tottenham's Transfer Prospects

The tonic to that lack of transfer activity is that Spurs have been able to keep all of their top stars, with a number of them tied down to new deals.

Alderweireld's teammates Danny Rose and Mousa Dembele were also expected to leave the club this summer but failed to get their moves over the line before the transfer deadline.

Alderweireld was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United but firm interest never materialised.

'We didn't receive (any offer) for any player, ' Pochettino told reporters in his pre-Newcastle press conference.

With so many Tottenham players involved in the latter stages of the World Cup, Pochettino has had little time to work with the whole squad leading into the first game.

'I am the boss and if I expect from you to do something, then you need to provide it.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has shed some light on defender Toby Alderweireld's future in north London.

"Of course it's hard to understand for people in football that Tottenham didn't sign or sell players, but sometimes in football you need to behave differently", he said.

"Our targets are always in the same level of Real Madrid or Manchester United or Manchester City, but for different circumstances we can not achieve that".

Pochettino added: "What the club is doing is showing it is so fearless".

"If we can not improve our squad it's better to keep it together".

But Pochettino has warned that he will demand full commitment from anyone who is still at the club after the continental window closes.

"I am responsible for what I told you [in May] or what I tell you, but I can not be responsible for what you believe that I wanted to tell you", he said.

"The most important thing is we're so positive and of course we're going to challenge for big things this season too".
