While you ponder that question, check out how some on Twitter are exhibiting a range of emotion, ranging from excitement, skepticism and sarcasm about Elba playing James Bond.

Fans have been calling for Elba to play Bond for years now, but it isn't looking promising at this point.

After teasing fans about becoming the next James Bond, Idris Elba has four words for fans that think he is taking the role: "don't believe the HYPE".

Idris Elba appears to have mocked continued rumours he is in line to take over as the star of the James Bond franchise, following the latest round of media speculation linking him to the role.

A few hours later, the actor tweeted again and this time he wrote, "Don't believe the HYPE".

Elba most recently starred in Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnorak, where he played Heimdall, the all-seeing and all-knowing Asgardian and former guard of the Bifrost Bridge.

And now Idris Elba has dropped his biggest hint yet, tweeting a not-so cryptic reference to the legendary film series. The original story came from United Kingdom tabloid The Daily Star, which claimed that director Antoine Fuqua spoke with James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli about implementing a Black James Bond into the franchise.

All eyes will now be on Elba, but what about the other likely candidates for the famous role?

The publication claimed director Antoine Fuqua said: "Idris could do it if he was in shape". Craig is slated to return as Agent 007 in the now unnamed 25th James Bond film.

"You need a guy with physically strong presence".
