German couple JAILED for raping son and selling him to paedophiles

A woman and her partner in southern Germany were on Tuesday (Aug 7) sentenced to jail for selling her young son to paedophiles on the darknet.

Her husband Christian Lais, the boy's stepfather whom he called "papa", received a 12-year sentence followed by preventive detention.

The 48-year-old mother will not appeal her 12-and-a-half-year prison sentence because she wanted to signal to her 10-year-old son that "things would be quiet now", her lawyer Matthias Wagner said.

The case has shocked Germany and sparked a row over how the couple were able to sell the boy for sex for thousands of euros even though they were already on the...

The pair and six others were arrested last fall.

On Monday, the same court sentenced a Spanish paedophile, Javier Gonzalez Diaz, to 10 years' prison for repeatedly sexually abusing the young boy after paying the parents.

They were accused of having sexually assaulted the boy - who was nine when their trial began in June - as well as pimping him on the darknet for more than two years.

In Tuesday's verdict, the couple was ordered to pay a total 30,000 euros ($34,650) in compensation to the boy and 12,500 euros to the girl they abused previously.

Case psychiatrist, Hartmut Pleines, quoted by Spiegel news, said the mother's claim that she was in thrall to her partner when she committed the abuse, was false.

Freiburg police chief Peter Egetemaier said that the investigation into the couple had led them to around 20 other people who are now under investigation for child sexual abuse based on confiscated images and video footage. The abuse was filmed.

He also made serious accusations against the child's mother, who confessed to the crimes but remained largely silent about any possible motive during the trial. Officials took the boy out of the family in March a year ago, but a local court sent him back weeks later.
