The crash, near the airport in Bologna, caused part of a bridge to collapse, with several vehicles in a auto park below it catching fire and exploding.

Police in Bologna said a vehicle accident caused a fire that led to the explosion, and Italian firefighters said a tanker carrying inflammable material was involved.

Within minutes of the explosion, several videos emerged on social media showing the moment the billowing smoke erupted into a fireball.

Firefighters and ambulances headed to the scene.

Police said in a statement on Twitter: "Due to an accident on the highway, an explosion occurred resulting in a fire at Via Marco Emilio Lepido".

Bologna is the lively, historic capital of the Emilia-Romagna region, in northern Italy.

Local police said that there had been a collision on the motorway and an explosion happened in the subsequent fire.

The blast shook the city, shattering windows in surrounding buildings and destroying cars in two dealerships under the flyover.

Videos of the blast site showed flames shooting up in the air, followed by a thick cloud of black smoke.

Italian news agencies have reported that multiple injuries were caused by flying glass from broken windows.
