Mr Trump has refused to publish a letter drafted by White House staff on the death of Mr McCain. Trump questioned the decorated veteran and six-term senator's heroism and chafed at McCain's vote to kill the health care law repeal.

McCain, 81, died over the weekend after a lengthy battle with cancer.
