Modric's contributions were recognised with the prestigious Golden Ball award, crowning him the best player at the tournament in Russian Federation.

Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui has attempted to end speculation linking Luka Modric with a move to Inter, insisting the Blancos will welcome him back with open arms.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has already suggested it will take a whopping bid of more than £670million to land the midfielder.

"We will see him when we get back [to Spain] on August 8 and we'll see if he is available on the 15th in our first key match".

Modric joined Real Madrid in the year 2012.

He looks set to quit Real, who value the 24-year-old at around £60m.

How could Real Madrid line up next season after the transfer window?

Having featured for Croatia in the World Cup final in Russia, Kovacic wants a more prominent role in club football.

"The president [Florentino Perez] was clear and unequivocal", Lopetegui said. The 24-year-old Croatia worldwide is keen to play more regularly than he does for Real but the club do not want to sell him because he is a good deputy for 32-year-old Luka Modric.

"I told him he was a player I'm passionate about, I love him and he knows it".

"Luka is a Real Madrid player and I have no doubt that he will stay here".

"I answered that the other day", Lopetegui told reporters when asked about Modric's future.

Modric has two years remaining on the contract extension he signed in October 2016.
