5 bold Premier League predictions: Emery triumphs over Guardiola

Arsenal are the first Premier League opponents for defending champions, Manchester City, yet after a relatively quiet summer in the transfer market Pep Guardiola has admitted the club simply didn't have much money to spend.

Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant all arrived at United by early July, but nobody has followed despite Mourinho's explicit desire to bring in two more players.

And ahead of his side's Premier League season opener against Leicester on Friday night, Mourinho addressed reporters' questions about whether United would be getting any late business done on deadline day.

Liverpool FC placed in fourth spot and finished 25 points behind Manchester City, although the Reds knocked the Citizens out of the Champions League thanks to a 5-1 aggregate win in the quarter-finals.

"I'm not confident, I'm not confident and the market closes today, so is time at least for me to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed", Mourinho said.

"My view is that first of all it is hard for me to believe that we finished second when I listen, when I read - not much but sometimes I do", the United boss said.

"They returned on Monday, trained Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and today so you can imagine they are not really fit and ready but we have needs", Mourinho said. It is hard for me to understand we finish second.

He added that he feels Manchester City will simply be too good for their rivals, commenting: "I said at the end of last season that to go down as an all-time great team, they need to be serial winners and defend their title, and I think they will do that".

"But I hope someone can catch them - it would be nice, so hopefully Manchester United can".

"In Championship Manager you can just press a button", he stated.

"I said many times, we can not spend every season what we spent last season". I was told that during pre-season it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, something insane.

'My view is that first of all it's hard for me to believe we finished second, ' said Mourinho of last season.
