The Switzerland worldwide is keen to leave Stoke after their relegation from the Premier League and is reported to have a release clause in his contract, although the exact details of that remain unknown.

One of Switzerland's star performances in Russian Federation, his last-minute victor against Serbia sent the side through to the World Cup's round of 16 before their campaign drew to a close with a defeat to Sweden.

Liverpool have begun formal negotiations with Stoke City over the transfer of Xherdan Shaqiri, according to reports.

Shaqiri scored eight times for Stoke last season and has made 92 appearances in total since joining from Inter in 2015.

There is a release clause in his contract - understood to be around £13m - and Liverpool are discussing the details on that with the club.

A move to Anfield would make Shaqiri the Reds' third signing of the summer following the arrival of midfielders Fabinho and Isaac Christie-Davies.

Klopp's side reached the Champions League final last season but finished a distant 25 points behind record breaking champions Manchester City.

Stoke are interested in taking 21-year-old winger Sheyi Ojo on loan but no decision has been made by Reds' boss Jürgen Klopp with regards that separate bit of business. Liverpool have been trying to reignite a deal despite a hands-off warning issued before the World Cup. They have no interest in the likes of Nick Pope, Jasper Cillessen, Thomas Strakosha and Jiri Pavlenka, all of whom have been linked of late.
