South Korea's Yonhap news agency, citing South Korean government and US military sources, said the negotiations had begun at 0100 GMT at the border village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas.

State media say that Kim has harshly reprimanded local officials over a delayed construction project.

Returning the remains of the US soldiers who perished during the 1950-53 conflict was part of a deal signed by the North's leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump during their landmark summit last month.

"The problem is that the incumbent USA administration is aware of the groundlessness and malicious nature of those suspicions on the DPRK's nuclear program but is trying to use them to put pressure on our republic", Meari said in a commentary.

According to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, about 7,700 US troops are still listed as missing from the Korean War, and about 5,300 of that total are believed to have fallen in North Korea.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un berated officials during inspections of a factory, power station, and holiday camp, state media reported on Tuesday, with analysts saying the reports show nuclear-armed Pyongyang's desire to focus on economic development.

Pompeo claimed that a "great deal of progress" was made during talks, however, North Korea's foreign ministry called the meeting "regrettable", describing the US attitude as "cancerous". In 2013, the North severed its hotline with the UNC, declaring the armistice that ended the Korean War null and void. The two sides met on the inter-Korean border and agreed to resume joint field activities to search for the remains of Americans missing from the war, Pompeo said in a statement.

The U.S. government estimates that the North Korean government has about 80,000 to 120,000 political prisoners in detention.

The messaging was somewhat of a theme over the weekend with two other North Korean outlets - DPRK Today and Uriminzokkiri - filing similar reports criticizing USA media for raising doubts about the North's intention to fulfill its commitment for denuclearization.

Reuters was unable to confirm whether the armistice issue was discussed at Sunday's talks.

Working level meetings will begin on Monday to coordinate the next steps for the repatriation of remains, including the transfer of those already collected in North Korea, Pompeo said.

In addition to the announcement on joint searches, the USA and North Korea are working to transfer the remains of what could be 200 American service members in the 14 to 21 days "subject to change without notification", a U.S. official told CNN.

He later said he had made progress on setting a timeline for North Korea's denuclearization.
