Alaska's last two Blockbuster video stores are calling it quits, leaving just one store open in the rest of the nation. Kevin Daymude, Blockbuster Alaska general manager Kevin Daymude told CNN affiliate KTVA.

According to Deadline, the stores officially close on Monday, but will sell off their remaining inventory from Tuesday until the end of August.

General manager Kevin Daymude is setting up a display of Russell Crowe movie memorabilia at the Blockbuster store on DeBarr Road in Anchorage on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, which includes the leather jockstrap Crowe wore in the movie "Cinderella Man".

On Sunday, two stores in Anchorage, Alaska, will shut up shop for good.

With the closures, Blockbuster will be down to just one location left open in the entire United States: a store in Bend, Oregon.

"We have a great customer base", he said, "and it kills us to tell these customers that we're having to close down". We have thought of you as family for the past 28 years.

The last two Blockbuster stores in Alaska will close.

Blockbuster gave in and declared bankruptcy in 2010, and its remaining 1,700 stores were bought by Dish Network in 2011. According to Deadline, at Blockbuster's peak it had "more than 9,000 stores, half outside the U.S., and employed more than 84,000 people worldwide".

The video rental chain in 2000 notoriously made one of the worst business decisions of all time when it rejected a young company called Netflix whose CEO Reed Hastings offered to partner with the chain and run its online operations - Hastings was "laughed out of the room" as one report put it. "I can't thank John Oliver or his show enough".

"You would not believe how much business we got just from that memorabilia alone", he said. She said she has been working at Blockbuster for 14 years and seen her share of heartache as stores closed.

The statement says both Vey and Daymude have been with the company since 1991. The Wasilla, North Pole and Soldotna locations closed earlier this year, along with a second Anchorage store.

Texas and Alaska used to be popular locations for Blockbuster because of the poor quality of high-speed internet service and high prices.
