The FedExCup Playoffs will feature three events, instead of four, starting with the 2018-19 PGA Tour season according to the official 2018-19 schedule released Tuesday.

The PGA TOUR, on behalf of the International Federation of PGA Tours, announced in April that Memphis' hometown event will take on a new identity as the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, beginning with the 2018-19 PGA TOUR Season. Top players then go straight to Tennessee for the FedEx Cup Invitational, a World Golf Championship in Memphis that replaces the event held at Firestone in Ohio.

Here are the five biggest changes to the 2019 PGA Tour schedule.

The Players Championship - often described as the unofficial fifth major - has been moved to March from its previous date in May, with the end-of-season FedEx Cup play-offs shortened to three events and finishing on 25 August.

The three playoff events are The Northern Trust at Liberty National in New Jersey; the BMW Championship at Medinah outside Chicago; and the Tour Championship, which will be August 22-25 at East Lake in Atlanta.

The tournament is the first to transition from the Champions to the PGA Tour. "This will enhance the visibility of the FedEx Cup play-offs and overall fan engagement with the PGA Tour and the game as a whole".

The PGA Tour is expected to announce a revamped playoff format later this year.

"By concluding at the end of August, the FedExCup playoffs no longer have the challenge of sharing the stage with college and professional football".

The US PGA playoffs will now start August 8-11 with the Northern Trust, which will be played near NY in 2019 and Boston in 2020 as the cities exchange host rights each year rather than each hosting a playoff event as they will this year.

Preparations for the final Dell Technologies Championship are underway and the 100-player field will have its unique Monday finish for one last time on September 3.

After the RBC Heritage and Zurich Classic of New Orleans comes the Wells Fargo Championship. Jack Nicklaus' Memorial Tournament takes its usual spot two weeks before the U.S. Open, with the Canadian Open in between.

The 3M Open will be held two weeks before players head across the pond for The Open Championship, which will be held in Northern Ireland in 2019.

Still to be determined is when the new fall schedule will begin in 2019 and how many tournaments will be part of it.
