According to data analytics website Twitter Audit, Modi, Kejriwal and Gandhi together have a combined Twitter credibility of just 35% - only 35 out of every 100 followers on an average are "real people".

The most-followed account on Twitter belongs to popular singer Katy Perry, who lost 1.5 million followers; the number now stands at 108.1 million.

Although losing 2 million followers is undoubtedly a significant drop, proportionally speaking it's not necessarily huge. Katy Perry, the most followed person on Twitter, lost at least 1.5 million followers, leaving her leaving her at 107 million followers, Variety reports.

Since the above tweet was published on Thursday evening, Lewis's follower count has dropped further to 363,000. Twitter locks accounts when they display a sudden change of behaviour, like sending lots of unsolicited replies.

Twitter's top executive didn't slide by unscathed in the social-media site's crackdown on fake followers. "In these situations, we reach out to the owners of the accounts and unless they validate the account and reset their passwords, we keep them locked with no ability to log in", Twitter announced on Wednesday.

The social site had warned that users with larger follower counts will experience a significant drop it moved to delete invalidated accounts.

Twitter said Wednesday it was purging the "locked" accounts in part to increase trust in and transparency about the service.

YouTube's official Twitter handle witnessed a 2.8 percent dip and now has 70.39 million followers.

Popular radio presenter Shaffie Weru also spoke about the purge making light of the situation noting: "Twitter is doing away with all fake followers.nobody can stop reggae my frens (friends), we are all dying".

Katy Perry, now the most-followed person on Twitter, had more than 109 million followers on Wednesday - a number that plunged to about 108 million on Thursday afternoon.

President Trump, who uses his Twitter account, a bit too frequently some might say, speak his mind, lost about 340,000 followers, which is a small number compared to former President Barack Obama, who lost 3 million followers.
