The man who originated the charismatic character almost four decades ago is reportedly headed back to that far away galaxy for Star Wars: Episode IX, the upcoming installment in the blockbuster franchise. Williams has also provided his voice to the role in various cartoon series and video games in recent years.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Williams will be returning to Star Wars as Lando who was recently portrayed by Donald Glover in the Star Wars standalone prequel Solo.

Williams first made his debut as the suave galactic gambler who went on to become an administrator of Cloud City in 1980's Empire Strikes Back.

Williams joins a cast that includes Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, and Keri Russell.

A rumor that a beloved Star Wars character would be returning for Star Wars: Episode IX has now been confirmed.

Episode IX is now set to debut December 20, 2019.

Given the tragic death of Carrie Fisher after The Last Jedi, and the fact that Episode IX was supposed to focus on her character General Leia Organa, we would be entirely without original trilogy characters if Lando didn't return. Production on the project is scheduled to begin at the end of the month.

That's a shame, really, especially when you factor in claims that Lucasfilm had initially hoped to delay the release of Han Solo's origins movie until December of 2018, only to be shot down by Disney.
