The 19-year-old from California was on vacation with her boyfriend and his family when she heard that swimming with nurse sharks was a fun and safe activity.

The outlet said her boyfriend's father was taking a photo of her as she floated near the sharks when one of them attacked.

But as she posed for a photo, a shark latched onto Zarutskie's arm. She began floating in the water and everything seemed fine, but then one of the animals bit her and dragged her underwater.

Zarutskie has almost doubled her following on Instagram since her story came out; however, she has since made her account private, partly because she has "received a lot of rude and hateful comments from people that were saying ridiculous things", she told BBC.

"At this point people were starting to take photos and right as I lay back, after a few seconds, I was pulled under", she says.

"I think if someone was screaming and flailing around it definitely could have changed the situation".

Thankfully she was okay and just had to get stitches and antibiotics for her injuries, though she does still have some fragments of teeth left in the wounds.

"They are wild animals, and it's an uncontrollable situation", she said. Katarina posted them to social media, where she's been overwhelmed with comments asking for details. She believes the bite was "all a big accident" and the shark may have mistaken her for a piece of food.

Katarina also rejects accusations she ignored local advice or went into the water during feeding time. "They took the information they wanted and really spun the story in a way that I'm a stupid blond Instagram model".

An aspiring model and college student found out the hard way that swimming with sharks is not a good career move.
