"It's something, for me, special".

"People say I had a hard season but I don't agree with that", Lovren said.

Croatia sensationally cemented their first ever World Cup final with a dramatic 2-1 extra time win over a gallant England side at Luzhniki Stadium in the Russian capital on Wednesday.

The signing of a world class goalkeeper remains the primary target for Liverpool this summer, particularly following Loris Karius' high profile mistakes in the Champions League final at the end of May.

The defender, who also reached the Champions League final with Liverpool in May, will face France in the World Cup final on Sunday and the 29-year-old feels he has proved himself this season.

"I think people should recognise that I'm one of the best defenders in the world and not just talk nonsense I will say". Croatia last made its way to the semi-finals in 1998, where it was beaten by the host-country France.

He continued: 'This is something we will never forget. "People are crying in our country", he added.

"We beat our record from 20 years ago. People will never forget us", Lovren said.

"We have the chance to do something better, and hopefully we can do it on Sunday".

'It was tough first-half.

"We thought we were just good enough, we thought we could have done that".

But after the break, Croatia took control, equalised through Ivan Perisic and then won the game with Mario Mandzukic's extra-time strike.

"Modric is not one of the best, [he is] the best midfield player in the world and if we win this World Cup he deserves the Ballon d'Or".
