This eclipse is rare because it will last for so long and the moon will be ducked in the Earth's shadow for four hours and totally eclipsed for one hour and 45 minutes. But observers in much of Africa, the Middle East, southern Asia and the Indian Ocean region will get an eyeful, given cooperative weather, according to lunar scientist Noah Petro, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Do note that the time of the maximum eclipse is 1.51 am, so if you want to see the blood moon in full glory try to stay awake till then. The eclipse will continue till 4.58 am, though the effect will not look as great.

Not only will you be able to see the blood moon tonight, you may also get a glimpse of the planet Mars, which is at its closest to Earth in 15 years.

'However instead of turning black as you might expect, the atmosphere of the Earth bends the light of the sun onto the moon causing it to turn a deep red colour'.

As a total lunar eclipse, the Aquarius full blood moon is also known by some Native American tribes as the "Full Buck Moon", since it is around this time of year that new antlers begin to push up through a young buck's forehead.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon completely obscures the sun, a partial eclipse occurs when the moon blocks part of the sun, and an annular solar eclipse is when the Moon is farthest from Earth.

At 12.19am, the moon will be out of the earth's umbral shadow and the observable eclipse will be over.

This will be a historical eclipse as it will last three hours and 55 minutes, making it the longest eclipse of this century. "About an hour later, the partial phase will begin at 2.24am when the moon begins to be covered by the dark Earth's shadow, the Umbra", he said.

In less than six months, another total lunar eclipse will take place directly over the Western Hemisphere. The moon will be below the horizon and out of sight in the United States, Canada, Mexico and other North American countries during the eclipse.

Head media and corporate communications of the Agency, Dr. Felix Ale, told The Guardian: "The Eclipse in Nigeria will start around 6:44pm as partial eclipse and developed into a total eclipse around 7:30pm". During this rare phenomena, the Moon will turn bright red and it will be visible in India as well.

Where can you see the blood moon in July 2018? But a small amount of light does actually pass through the outer parts of the Earth's atmosphere and reflect off the moon.
