A photo from the Italian website La Nuova showed the car's windshield cracked.

A fire extinguisher can be seen on the road but no people from the accident were involved.

The Ocean's Eleven star - who recently attended Prince William and Meghan Markle 's royal wedding - was then taken to John Paul II hospital in Olbia, where his wife, Amal Clooney, rushed to be by his side.

MailOnline has contacted a representative for George for comment.

Their outing comes amid reports that the pair are renting a handsome two-storey villa from Ezio Maria Simonelli, an accountant and man close to former Italian president Silvio Berlusconi.

This is a developing story and will be updated when more information becomes available.

Mr Clooney was driving from his rented villa in Punta Aldia to Capo Ceraso, on the Sardinian coast, where he is filming a TV series based on the Second World War novel Catch-22.

The stunning abode features two swimming pools, a tennis court and an incredibly colourful landscape.

Based on Joseph Heller's classic novel, it will be broadcast in the United Kingdom on Channel 4.

Clooney has a home on the Italian mainland, on Lake Como.

His castmates include Hugh Laurie, Austin Stowell ('Whiplash') and Kyle Martin Chandler ('Friday Night Lights').
