Former Illini Anderson braces for Federer

The last time Federer played a Wimbledon match away from Centre Court it had no negative impact as he trounced Gilles Simon at the same stage of the 2015 tournament before beating home favourite Andy Murray to reach the final where he was undone by a dominant Novak Djokovic.

Federer had a match point in the third set at 4-5, 30-40 but failed to take it, before Anderson broke in the following game to earn the opportunity to serve out the set.

Defending champion Roger Federer is out of Wimbledon after eighth seed Kevin Anderson fought back from two sets down in a gripping quarter-final.

And it was Federer who blinked, double-faulting to face a break point at 11-all, then slapping a forehand into the net to cede the key break. Federer is now 266-3 after winning the first two sets.

But his run at Wimbledon might have come as a surprise even to Anderson, who had never made it past the fourth round prior to this year and lost in the first round of the grass-court event at Queen's Club last month.

Anderson, the eighth seed, knocked off the eight-time champion 2-6, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4, 13-11.

Rafael Nadal ended a seven-year wait to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals again as Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic joined him in the last eight.

Federer previously won 34 straight sets between the third round in 2005 and the final in 2006 but records were the last thing on Federer's mind as he just thinking of making it through to the last four unscathed. I think it went in spells a bit also, how I was able to return his serve.

Roger Federer's Wimbledon title defence is over following a dramatic five-set quarterfinal loss to an inspired Kevin Anderson on Wednesday (Thursday NZ Time).

Update: Federer not only dropped his first set, but his second as well.

But Federer offered a contrasting view in his media conference following a 6-0 7-5 6-4 fourth-round win over Adrian Mannarino on Monday.

It's Anderson's very first time in the Wimbledon semi-finals and he will now face either Milos Raonic or John Isner for a place in the final.

Should Djokovic, Nadal and Federer win, it would be the first time all three played in a semifinal since the 2012 French Open.

But after failing to convert a match point in the third set, Federer allowed a rash of errors to creep into his game, particularly on the forehand side. Fubo TV also offers three days of auto recording and 30 hours of Cloud DVR service in case you can't watch Wimbledon matches as they happen.

Later, Ramos warned Djokovic for a time violation, but that didn't seem to faze the Serb.
